How do Warma Windows work?

The principle behind Warma Windows is very simple: allow solar energy in so it can heat up your home, but don't let that heat escape back out through the window again. The result is that the internal temperature of your home increases without having to use any additional energy.

The science behind how Warma Windows work is a bit more complex. Solar gain windows are transmittance windows that allow sunlight to enter a building and generate heat. The window is a double-glazed Insulating Glass Unit (IGU), comprising of two panes of glass separated by a thermally-efficient spacer bar and filled with special gas to prevent heat transfer. The outer pane of the sealed double-glazed unit is coated in a special reflective, low-emissivity (low-e) coating that allows solar energy to pass through but reflective heat radiation back inside your home.

Frequently Asked Questions

Want to know more about Warma Windows and how solar gain works? We've got answers to the most common questions below, but if you can't find the answer you're looking for, don't hesitate to get in touch.

What is a solar gain window?

Solar gain windows have been designed to maximise the amount of solar energy that can enter a building. Our windows are double-glazed, with a low-emissivity (low-e) coating applied to the glass. This coating reflects heat back into the building, helping to keep it warm in winter and cool in summer. Solar gain windows still allow natural light to enter the space, reducing the need for artificial lighting during daylight hours. In addition, these windows can help reduce energy bills as they require less energy for heating and cooling purposes.

What is solar heat gain coefficient for windows?

When talking about solar gain windows you will hear the term solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC) mentioned. This refers to the amount of solar radiation allowed to pass through a window and subsequently released as heat inside a home. The higher the SHGC value, the more solar heat the window transmits and the greater the levels of heat gain achieved. A lower SHGC value indicates the window is good at shading, and keeping the interior cool with less heat gain.

What type of windows can Warma Windows be fitted to?

Our range of casement windows can be fitted with the latest Warma Windows glazing. When combined with our thermally-efficient uPVC casement frames, homeowners can enjoy improved insulation and reduced heat loss to improve the energy efficiency of their home.

Are Warma Windows the same as solar windows?

No, Warma Windows are a direct replacement for regular double-glazing and use solar heat gain to help warm your home - a special low-e coating on one of the panes of glass then prevents that heat from escaping, and your home feels warmer as a result. Solar windows are considerably more expensive and complex to install, and act more like traditional solar panels you'd find on a roof - they use photovoltaic glass to generate electricity from the solar energy, but don't use the thermal gain in the same way as Warma Windows do.
